Description

The Internship BA3 is meant to master your previously acquired practical skills and to enhance your employability opportunities. You can choose between developing an advanced level of fieldwork skills at a Faculty project or at another archaeological organisation, an internship at a museum or a governmental organisation, work on archaeological materials in a laboratory, or databases or GIS projects.

Important aspects of the Internship BA3 involve developing your own independent way of working as an archaeologist, asking your own questions, critically thinking about methodologies, data processing and analysis, as well as reporting. You do not have to be involved in all these aspects, but you are supposed to be develop a more advanced level of critical academic attitude when compared to Internship BA2. This means that we expect you to (for example):

  • focus on a research question you (help) formulate;

  • help prepare or contribute to a report/publication;

  • help design the fieldwork strategy based on the research questions;

  • function as a unit supervisor, assisting and ‘supervising’ other team members and volunteers;

  • help contribute to the project data-base and participate in data-analysis;

  • design your own mini-project within a research project (e.g., focusing on community participation or outreach when doing fieldwork);

  • contribute to / participate in a sampling program;

  • etc.

The Internship BA3 has to take place on one project that lasts at least 15 workdays of 8 hours. You are expected to arrange your own project. You can schedule your internship in any period in which you do not have other educational obligations at university: courses, exams and retakes always have priority(!)

The course is concluded by writing your Internship report (detailed instructions and outline provided in Brightspace). This report should include:

  • 15 daily reports (min. of 8 working hours a day);

  • Report on the project you participated in;

  • Reflection on the project you participated in and the skills that you trained;

  • Assessment by the Internship provider: the evaluation and feedback form.

Always start by checking Brightspace: here you can find all the necessary procedures, forms, FAQs, tips and tricks and a list of archaeological organisations in the Netherlands. Relevant projects that have come to the faculty’s attention will also be advertises via Brightspace.
An important step in arranging and preparing an internship is to fill out the Internship BA3 agreement form:

  • Fill out the official ‘Internship BA3 agreement form’ (to be found on Brightspace) with the Internship provider (Party B on the agreement form);

  • Send the filled-out ‘Internship BA3 agreement form’ to the appointed region coordinator (see Brightspace; Party A on the agreement form) for approval of the internship;

  • Upload the signed form in Brightspace before the start of the Internship.

Going abroad?

Start your preparations and arrangements on time. It is recommended to have arranged for everything 6 weeks before you leave. Two mandatory steps for internships abroad involve:

  • Registering your study activity abroad in USIS;

  • Taking part in one of the Health and Safety meetings organised by the university. More information about these meetings is available on Brightspace.

Course objectives

  • To independently procure an internship position in a professional learning environment;

  • To gain more experience in working in a professional environment;

  • To enhance your employability by increasing practical skills needed for a future job;

  • To master professional and practical archaeological skills and to develop an independent research attitude;

  • To understand the relevance of archaeological heritage in present-day society;

  • To understand the legal and social context and obligations of a project or company;

  • Being able to critically evaluate research methodologies and archaeological interpretations;

  • Being able to report in accordance with the stated requirements in a well-structured academic internship report;

  • Being able to work both independently as well as in a team under challenging conditions.

Mode of instruction

Practical, hands-on participation in an archaeological research project.

Assessment method

The assessment for Internship BA3 consists out of two elements:

  • Evaluation and feedback form to be filled out by the Internship provider (50%);

  • The Internship report (50%). In this final assignment you report and reflect on the internship you participated in (see Brightspace for guidelines).

The Internship report needs to be handed in through Brightspace within 6 weeks after the last internship day.

The Internship report needs to cover 15 workdays of 8 hours. Extra days may be included, but will not be counted as extra EC’s.

A retake is only possible for the portfolio and only when the overall grade is lower than 5.5.

Reading list

To be compiled by the student, in consultation with the internship supervisor/provider (study materials depending on the internship[s]). The reading list must comprise, but is not necessarily limited to, academic literature.

Registration

Enrolment for all components of your study programme through MyStudymap is mandatory. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
