Vak
2024-2025

Admission requirements

N.A.

Description

In this course we discuss a number of influential theories about performance, performativity and theatricality as they have been developed in theater and performance studies. We will discuss canonical thinkers from the field, ranging from Constantin Stanislavski to Peggy Phelan, as well as relevant theories of performativity in gender studies and cultural studies. We will do this each time on the basis of significant case studies.
The course builds on Inleiding Dramatische Media, but has a more theoretical and interdisciplinary character. Upon completion you will have a better grip on the field’s basic concepts and you will be able to relate them in a meaningful way to various artistic works in modern or contemporary performance and theater traditions.

In preparation for the weekly meetings, you will read a number of articles (± 50 pages per session) and watch assigned films (varying from 30-90 minutes).
