Admission requirements

This course is only available for BA students in Korean Studies and in some cases also for students in MA Asian Studies.

Prerequisite: Students should know how to read and write Korean alphabet, Hangeul, prior to joining the course. The online lessons in the following link may help.

Description

In this intensive flipped-learning language course, students will learn Korean in an interactive small-group setting. Through various speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar exercises and activities, both online and offline, students will gain fundamental linguistic knowledge and learn how to use the Korean language for practical purposes.
Foreign language learning is an accumulative process. Students are expected to attend all classes and study for a MINIMUM of 2 hours daily to make successful progress in this course.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students are expected to (or will be able to):

  • Read and write Korean alphabet fluently;

  • Acquire reasonably good pronunciation and accent;

  • Grasp fundamental knowledge of Korean grammar;

  • Gain 720+ new items of vocabulary;

  • Understand simple spoken and written Korean on familiar topics, mostly related to self and direct surroundings;

  • Maintain simple daily conversation and write sentences and paragraphs on personal matters;

  • Gain insight into Korean language and culture, fostering cross-cultural awareness by understanding societal norms, values, and communication styles.

  • Develop independent learning skills by effectively managing self-study in the flipped-learning setting (watching grammar video clips and completing online quizzes prior to class sessions).

Assessment method

Assessment and Weighing

Students must pass the exams (the midterm and final written exams as well as the final oral exams). Thereafter final grades will be determined according to the following formula:

  • Weekly in-class vocabulary quizzes: 5%;

  • Midterm written exam: 20%;

  • Final written exam: 60%;

  • Final oral exam: 15%.

No partial EC is given – students should attend all classes (10hrs/week) to obtain the course grade.

note:

Prerequisites for the midterm written exams:

  • No more than two missing workbook units in 1A

  • Average 90% or higher in the 1A online pre-unit tests

Prerequisites for the final written exams:

  • No more than two missing workbook units in 1B

  • Average 90% or higher in the online pre-unit tests

Resit

  • Students who fail to meet the attendance requirement will fail the course. No resit or make-up.

  • Students can do two vocabulary resits upon request, as long as it is within two weeks of the original quiz date.

  • Upon request, students are allowed to resit online Remindo pre-unit tests twice for 1A and twice for 1B. It is recommended that the resit be completed within two weeks of the original closing date, and at the latest, two working days prior to the midterm or the final exam.

  • There is no resit after the midterm written exams, even if the grades are lower than 6.0.

  • If the weighted average grade of midterm and final for (1) listening, (2) reading, and (3) grammar, vocabulary, and dialogue respectively, is below 6.0, students need to resit only the failed portion. The resit covers all material of the relevant area of the course and the resit grade will replace both the midterm and final.

  • Even if the weighted average grade of the written exams is 6.0 or higher, students will have to resit if they receive a grade below 5.5 in any of the final exams.

  • The final oral consists of three exams. To pass, students must receive an overall grade of 6.0 or higher. If a student fails to receive a grade of 5.5 or higher in any of the three exams (even if the average of the three is over 6.0), the student must resit the failed portion(s). If a student receives a grade of 5.5 from all three oral exams, the student must resit at least one or two portion(s) of their choice to raise the overall average grade above 6.0.

Inspection and feedback

Within two weeks after an exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Brightspace in order for students to view their exam.
