Description
This course provides an introduction to gender in Korea, with a focus on South Korea but also including North Korea, encompassing both historical formations of gender relations and contemporary considerations. It examines, through historical, anthropological, and cultural studies scholarship, the centrality of gender in understandings of family, state, labor, religion, and ethnicity. The course is taught as a seminar and students should be prepared to manage a significant reading load and to discuss the readings actively. The schedule will be divided between mini-lectures, discussion of that week’s texts, in-class activities, media screenings, and workshopping student work.
Course objectives
Students will develop a nuanced interdisciplinary understanding of gender and the way it has developed as a concept and category in Korea. A major focus of the course is for students to develop their own historically and socially informed positions on gender politics and identity, and to practice persuasive, reflective, and analytical speaking and writing on gender. The final project, an online ethography, will develop critical thinking and reading, project planning, and academic writing skills.
