Admission requirements

This course is only available for BA Korean Studies students who successfully completed all BA2 Korean language courses.

Description

The aim of this course is to enable students to read works containing various literary expressions and cultures of Korea. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand the linguistic expressions contained in Korean literature and take their cultural understanding of Korea to the next level.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, students are expected to (or will be able to):

  • Understand various vocabulary used in Korean literature and use them appropriately in context.

  • Figure out the effects of various expressions (metaphor, symbol, paradox, irony, etc.) used in Korean literature.

  • Understand various expressions that contain Korea's unique historical and cultural context.

  • Understand the Korean sentiment contained in Korean literary works.

  • Express the feelings about the linguistic and cultural characteristics of Korean literary works.

Assessment method

Assessment and weighing

To successfully complete the course, students must submit assignments and a final project. The final rating is then determined according to the formula:

  • Assignment 1 (short essay): P/A

  • Assignment 2 (presentation): 10%

  • Final project (presentation): 20%

  • Final written exam: 70%

Resit

  • If you receive a score below 5.5 for the final exam, you should resit.

  • If you fail assignment 1, you must submit a new assignment and pass.

  • If you fail to submit assignment 2 on time, you may submit it in a later date but there is a penalty for late submission.

Inspection and feedback

Within two weeks after an exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Brightspace in order for students to review their exam.

Remarks

A strict attendance policy is imposed. Missing more than three (for 5EC language courses), six (for Korean 3) or nine (for Korean 1 and 2) sessions during the semester may get you barred from further attending the course and your exams may not be graded. Any absences must be notified in advance. Dispensation from the attendance policy for extenuating circumstances can only be granted by the Board of Examiners after consultation with the teacher.
