Description

In two blocks students will receive a comprehensive and practical introduction to research methods used in the LUCL Labs. In the first block students will gain practical knowledge of the first steps in designing, carrying out, analysing, and presenting a psycholinguistic experiment. In the second block students will carry out a practical project implementing acquired skills and techniques.

The emphasis in this course is on learning by doing.

Course objectives

  • Gaining in-depth knowledge of psycholinguistic research methods and techniques, including lab hardware and software such as Excel, Qualtrics, and E-Prime.

  • Understanding the practical steps involved in conceptualising and preparing a psycholinguistic experiment.

  • Consolidating practical skills by carrying out individual assignments and a group project.

Assessment method

Assessment

For successful completion of the course, the student is required to upload several practical assignments on Brightspace during the first block. In the second block, students must carry out a practical project and present their work in a scientific poster (assignment) and by writing a report (assignment). For some of the assignments, students may be required to hand in a peer review.

Assignments will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. If the student does not pass an assignment, an opportunity will be given to resubmit the assignment. Per assignment, one resubmission is accepted. Because of the setup of this course, a resit is not possible.

Attendance at all classes is obligatory.

To pass the course, all assignments must be completed with a pass.
