Admission requirements
The examination and, if indicated, the teaching of the following units of study can only be taken if the examinations of the preceding units of study have been passed of the course Experimental Methods I: Design & Techniques and Introduction to Methods and Statistics.
Description
Experimental Methods I: Design & Techniques and Experimental Methods II: Practicals & Projects together form one course. Over the entire two-semester course, students will receive a comprehensive and practical introduction to the research methods used in the LUCL Labs and have a chance to implement one of these techniques in an independent research project.
The course will link coherently to other elements of the BA Taal & Cognitie – for example, in Experimental Methods I (semester 1 of year two) the students learn how the theory they have already learned relates to experimental work in the labs; while in Experimental Methods II (semester 1 of year three) they will analyse their own data using skills gained in the course Statistics for linguists in semester 2 of year two.
Experimental Methods II consists of the learning units “Workflow of data collection & analysis” and “Practical project”, after which students will have the necessary competence to individually design, carry out, analyse, and present a psycholinguistic experiment.

Gaining in-depth knowledge of psycholinguistic research methods and techniques, including lab hardware and software
Consolidating practical skills by carrying out an individual project

Mode of instruction
Seminars; independent study and practical assignments.
Assessment method
For successful completion of the course, the student is required to upload several practical assignments on Brightspace during the first block. In the second block, students must carry out a practical project and present their work in a scientific poster session and a group presentation.
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
Weighting
Attendance and participation count for 10%, the updated research proposal for 10%, the practical assignments (including the final paper) and project set-up for 50%, the individual and group (poster) presentations for 30% of the final grade.
Resit
Students may resit the final assignment (final paper) provided that they have adequately attended the seminars (>80%) and that their overall final grade is a fail (< 55%).
