Description

In this course, students are introduced to the field of lexicography with a focus on computational and corpus linguistic aspects in lexicography. Lexicography is concerned with the theory and practice of compiling dictionaries.
We will discuss various computational tools lexicographers use whilst making a dictionary, including the Corpus Query System for analysis and the Dictionary Writing System for synthesis.
This course also teaches students about theoretical and practical issues involved in compiling complex data sets for lexicographic purposes. Students will learn about corpus design and annotation. They will learn how to manipulate text using regular expressions and will gain basic knowledge of database technology for lexicography.
We will couple the theory with practical activities such as compiling a corpus and preparing it for lexicographic use and using lexicographic tools to create a sample dictionary.

Course objectives

After successful completion of this course, student will:

  • have an insight in the lexicographic process (and its phases).

  • be able to use corpus methods for lexicography: corpus compilation, corpus annotation and corpus analysis.

  • be able to design a data model to represent lexicographic data and express it in XML.

  • be able to apply the acquired knowledge to compile a sample dictionary using a Corpus Query System and a Dictionary Writing System.

  • be able to structure and write a detailed lexicographic research report.

Timetable

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar (in case of four or more students)

  • Research (in case of less than four students)

Assessment method

The course is assessed by means of a final paper plus an evaluation of the practical work throughout term.

Resit

Please note that there is no resit for the sample dictionary assignment throughout term.

Weighing

The final mark is based on the grade for the final paper and the grade for the sample dictionary assignment (which is a practical assignment throughout the term). Weighting is as follows: paper 80%; sample dictionary assignment throughout the term 20%. To pass the course, the weighted average of the two grades must be 5.5 or higher.

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Inspection and feedback
