Description

This course takes you on an exciting journey through the dynamic world of cybersecurity, exploring it through the lens of political science and international relations. As a central issue for national security, the cyber domain challenges policymakers with complex and evolving strategic dilemmas. Together, we’ll dive into cutting-edge debates in international relations and security studies, uncover lessons from past technological revolutions, and tackle contemporary cybersecurity challenges.

You’ll engage with scholarly debates on the global impact of cyber capabilities, investigate the nuts and bolts of offensive cyber operations, and examine how legal, ethical, and normative frameworks aim to shape international cyber conflict. The course also brings these concepts to life with a end-of-course simulation exercise.

By the end of our time together, you’ll have built a strong foundation in cyber statecraft, diplomacy, and conflict. Plus, you’ll sharpen your critical thinking, analytical abilities, and communication skills—tools essential for navigating the fast-evolving field of international cybersecurity. Get ready to think strategically, act decisively, and make an impact in the cyber arena!

Mode of instruction

Assessment method

  • Group exercise (simulated UN negotiation), 30% of final grade – the modalities of the simulation, which will be held in the last scheduled week of class, will be shared closer to the date. Students will be graded in this exercise for their ability to integrate insights from readings, and their preparation as a group/ ability to work together as a team.

  • Written exam, 70% of final grade - three essay questions, closed book format.
