Internship MA Asian Studies

Vak
2025-2026

An internship can be a valuable experience in preparation for the job market. MA Asian studies students have pursued internships at various embassies in Asia, with multinational corporations, museums and publishers, among others. You can follow an internship as an extracurricular activity, or exchange one elective with the work you complete for an internship.
If you are interested in following an internship, it is important to start early, and follow several steps:

  • Make an appointment with the study adviser to discuss the procedure and how it could fit in your study program and what you need to do to be assigned an internship supervisor from our program.

  • Make an appointment with the career services at the Faculty of Humanities, who can advise you on the process.

  • Write an internship plan with concrete learning objectives, which align with the level of work you are expected to be able do as an MA Asian studies student, using the faculty template. The internship should involve activities where you can apply the knowledge and academic skills you have acquired in our programme. The internship plan includes, among others, a project description and a concrete description of activities which will lead to an internship report.

  • If you wish to count the internship toward your degree, it is important that your internship plan also aligns with the specific learning goals of the programme you are following, including advancing your knowledge of the region or country, relevant concepts and methodology, as well as academic skills in researching, analysing and writing about your research. The project should have an academic focus and approach, similar to research you complete for a course in the programme. Involve your supervisor at an early stage to discuss your internship plan.

  • The plan needs to be discussed with the internship supervisor and submitted to the Board of Examiners of the MA Asian studies for approval (also if you follow the internship as an extra curricular activity).

  • The internship report must be submitted within 10 days of the completion of the internship to the internship supervisor for approval.
