Description
How do we convey thoughts through spoken or signed language? How does the brain support these processes? And what are the kind of experiments though which we can acquire this knowledge? In this course we will discuss crucial findings in the neurobiology of language from both healthy participants and neuropsychological patients. Various language modalities are covered, such as language production, spoken language comprehension, and reading. Finally, the course includes an introduction to methodological approaches such as electro-encephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
Course objectives
A student who has successfully completed the course is able to:
describe and discuss important models and theories in the neurobiology of language
discuss and compare the main methodologies used in neurolinguistics
interpret and explain results from neurolinguistic experiments and patient studies
read and summarise neurolinguistics research papers published in peer-reviewed journals
Timetable
The timetables are available through My Timetable.
Mode of instruction
Lecture & lab visit (in small groups).
Assessment method
Two written exams: one midterm (40%) and end-of-term exam (50%). In addition, assessment includes class participation (10%).
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the grade for the final exam must be 5.5 or higher and the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.
Resits for both exams can be taken on the official resit date.
As part of the academic writing line within the track Language and Cognition, students are required to hand in a writing assignment, that will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Passing the writing assignment is required to pass the course.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
