2026-2027

Admission requirements

Prior knowledge of Introductie Moderne Natuurkunde, Klassieke Mechanica a, Classical Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics 2.

Description

This course focusses on the interplay between particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The list of topics includes

  • Particle interactions

  • Fundamental forces

  • Big Bang

  • Cosmic microwave background

  • Solar neutrinos

  • Cosmic rays

  • High-energy gamma rays

  • Cosmic neutrinos.

Course objectives

After successfully completing this course you will appreciate the role of the different forces in the Universe; you will be able to understand some of the macroscopic phenomena in terms of microscopic particles and you will have an overview of the experimental status in this field.

Schedule

The timetables are available through My Timetable (see the button in the upper right corner).

Teaching method

Eight courses of two hours in which the various topics are presented and explained using slides that are available in Brightspace followed by tutorials of two hours in which various example questions can be studied and discussed.

Assesment method

There will be a written exam at the end of the lecture series with questions covering the research aspects of this lecture series. The book quoted below as well as the slides presented durting the lecture series can be used during the exam.

Resit, review & feedback

Examinations are held twice during the academic year for each component offered in that academic year. Midterm tests cannot be retaken. The Board of Examiners determines the manner of resit for practical assignments.
For review and feedback, see Brightspace.

Remarks

Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform, you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software, your laptop must meet certain system requirements, which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course. More information about the laptop requirements can be found on the student website.
