Algebra 1

Beschrijving

The study of algebraic structures, begun in the Algebra 1 course, is continued. In this course, rings and modules are discussed. These play a central role in number theory, algebraic geometry, and more applied fields such as coding theory and cryptography. Topics covered include: rings, ideals, principal ideal domains, symmetric polynomials, geometric aspects of rings, modules, exact sequences, and the Jordan normal form for matrices.

Leerdoelen

Upon completion of this course, you will have operational knowledge of the above mathematical topics and be able to use this to calculate, reason, and solve problems.

Rooster

De roosters zijn beschikbaar via My Timetable (zie de knop rechtsboven in).

Onderwijsvorm

2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of tutorials per week, and homework

Toetsing en weging

The final grade consists of homework (10%) and a written exam (90%). To pass the course, the (unrounded) exam grade must be at least 5 and the (unrounded) weighted average of the two partial grades must be at least 5.5. There is no required minimum grade for the homework. The homework counts as a practical exercise and cannot be retaken.

Herkansing, inzage & nabespreking

The resit will be a written exam if more than 3 students are taking it. If 2 students or fewer are taking the resit, an oral resit exam will be arranged.
The homework counts as a practical exercise and cannot be retaken.
