Prerequisites: successful completion of Inleiding Middelegyptisch and Lectuur Middelegyptisch.
Description
This course develops skills in reading hieroglyphic texts of considerable literary merit from the classical stages of the ancient Egyptian language, including Old Egyptian and Middle Egyptian. The central theme of the texts read in the course will be the cult of the god Osiris at Abydos throughout the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms.
Course objectives
At the end of this course, students will have developed their practical knowledge of grammar and extended their Egyptian vocabularies. They will also be able to synthesize ideas built out of primary and secondary sources.

Assessment method
Mid-term examination: 25%. Final examination: 40%. Essay: 25%. Attendance: 10%.
The mid-term and final examinations will involve the transliteration, translation, and parsing of hieroglyphic texts. The essay, due on Friday, 28 January, concerns the synthesis of primary and secondary sources.
The final examination cannot be taken by a student who has missed more than two (2) classes without special approval of the “examencommissie.”
