This course deals with the interaction of religion and science in the ancient Near East. The emphasis lies on the cultus and the different disciplines that can be regarded as (pre)-science, such as astronomy, lexicography, divination, and the like. Students are familiarised with the nature and the level of the pre-Greek Mesopotamian-Anatolian religion and science and learn to place these in the line of developments that can be observed elsewhere in the world. For the disciplines involved, in addition to the department’s staff, specialists from the Netherlands and abroad may be invited.
