Description
Lucas van Leyden, despite being one of the most innovative and influential artists of the sixteenth century, has received comparatively little recent attention from art historians. This seminar will explore Lucas van Leyden’s range of artistic production in both paintings and prints, working closely with museum de Lakenhal, which is planning a new exhibition on Lucas in 2011. In particular, we will consider Lucas within his cultural, political, religious and artistic contexts.
Course objectives
Students will have an overview of Lucas van Leyden’s artistic production of both paintings and prints, will be able to locate him within period contexts and will understand the critical issues his art raises;
Students will be conversant with recent developments in Lucas scholarship, be able to articulate their conceptual premises, and to apply current methodology to analyzing Lucas’s art;
Students will gain facility with primary and secondary source research;
Students will develop their skills in visual analysis.
