This course is open to BA2 GLTC students. The course is also open to Archaeology students who have completed their propedeuse.
Description
This course will present students with the archaeological evidence about the development of the city of Athens mainly from the Archaic to the Roman Imperial period. The literary sources will be also discussed to highlight the social, political and economic significance of Athens’ material remains for the contemporaries.
A detailed course plan will be provided later on.
For GLTC students the course will be the preparation for an excursion to Athens that will also include daytrips to other ancient sites (e.g. Delphi, Corinth).
Course objectives
Students will acquire basic knowledge of ancient Athens’ monuments and buildings in view of archaeological and literary evidence. The course will also introduce students to the methodological problems and information value pertaining to archaeological material on the one hand and literary sources on the other hand.
The excursion to Athens for GLTC students will have various related aims: students will train their (English) presentation skills; they will make themselves familiar with the modern Greek way of life; and they will gain practical experience in travelling through modern Greece and Athens in particular. Cooperation and teamwork (both scholarly and social) belong to the most important objects of this excursion.

The lectures will take place in the 3rd block of the 2nd semester. Some additional sessions have been scheduled in the 4th block of the 2nd semester to discuss practicalities with the classics students participating in the excursion.
The excursion will be from May 21st-30rd 2011 (PROVISIONAL!).

Assessment method
GLTC students will (1) give oral presentations (in English), for which they will be working together in groups; they will also (2) write a paper of ca 3500 words (in Dutch or English), which they will have to submit before the date of departure. The topics will be distributed during the first sessions of the course.
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for the distribution of topics and literature, which will be the starting point for the presentations during the excursion.
