Analysis of "Own Data"

Vak
2010-2011

Description

This module takes place simultaneously with the data analyses for the research masters’ thesis, which is in block 4 for most students. This is quite a special course in the sense that it does not consist of lectures or work groups but students are instructed individually. This means that students following the research master program are obliged to bring there own data to the instructors. Then they get advice by which technique they can analyze there data.

The idea is that students get advice not only about traditional techniques, but also about alternative techniques. For instance, data from experiments are most often analyzed by univariate Analysis of Variance, however, a multivariate of Analysis of Variance may be more appropriate. Also other alternatives are quite often possible, like Discriminant Analysis, Structural Equation Models, Multilevel Analysis.

Students are asked to analyze their own data with alternative analyses and to make a report of the results. Students can get advice for making the assignment at a special help desk. People of this desk are trained in consulting and are specialized in helping with statistical techniques.

Course objectives

  • During the writing of their master thesis, students learn to use alternative methods for analyzing their data.

  • Students learn to apply several techniques on the same date set and to interpret the different results.
