Description
This research seminar explores the economic development of Southeast Asia, at the moment one of the world’s most interesting regions in terms of economic growth and rapid structural transformation. The survey applies a historical perspective going back to the 1960s. Key topics concern differences in macroeconomic performance across the ten ASEAN member states, the conditions underlying rapid economic growth, the role of the state in the process of economic growth and structural change, causes and effects of the Asian crisis in the late 1990s, and the current tendencies towards a further economic integration within the ASEAN. All participants read and discuss a number of selected recent articles. Individual research is based on original data, including statistics, often retrieved from websites of official institutions.
