Vak
2010-2011

Admission requirements

In addition to a BA-degree in Religious Studies, Middle Eastern Studies or a degree in one of the languages of the region, students are expected to have a basic understanding of the history of Christianity.

Description

This 10 EC European Intensive Programme (IP) offers post-graduate students from around 20 European universities a European Theology & Religious Studies course in the academic disciplines of Intercultural theology and Interreligious Studies. The IP in Istanbul is hosted by the theological faculty of Marmara University, gives emphasis to the European interreligious histories in general and allows students to study the challenges between Islam and Christianity in Southeast Europe in particular. Also, the impact of today’s inter-religious encounters and tensions for Europe’s theological schools will be reflected.
For 2012 (Sept. 9-23), a programme is scheduled in Sofia and Constantia, with the themes of Fluid Religions and Orthodoxy, allowing for a comparative study of these phenomena across religious traditions of Eastern and Western Europe alike.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the students will

  • have better insight in the history and current multi-religious situation of South-East Europe (including Turkey), with a focus on the relations between Islam and Christianity;

  • have increased awareness of the complex current situation via local exposure visits in the multi-religious context of Istanbul;

  • have focused on one particular topic (via a research paper) in the field of history, religion or theology;

  • have enhanced their research skills, especially in the field of writing and presenting for an European-wide public of graduate students and scholars in the field.
