Description
This course will introduce students to:
The urban evolution of Istanbul;
Byzantine archaeology;
Islamic archaeology;
Crusader archaeology;
The archaeology of the Italian Renaissance;
Ottoman archaeology;
The archaeology of capitalism.
Learning outcomes
Understanding of the development of the Mediterranean and Near East in Post-Roman times;
Ability to link the study of Medieval and Post-Medieval art and architecture to their social context;
Ability to evaluate the evidence of rural and urban excavations and survey to the making of post-Roman history.

Assessment
Two papers with a minimum of 3,000 words, reduced marks for late submission.
