SAP and exchange students: admission after approval by the Graduate School of Archaeology.

Description

A seminar of which the subject changes each year. The subject is closely related to research of the section Prehistory of North-Western Europe (2009: Roots of the round barrow; 2010: Hallstatt elite burials of Oss in context). Participants will, generally in small groups, carry out small research assignments that investigate aspects of the seminar theme. Research Master students sometimes co-organise these seminars and participate as coaches.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge of and insight in interpretative approaches to data from the Neolithic to the Iron Age;

  • Critical assessment of current research with respect to applicability and background;

  • Ability to voice one’s properly argumented opinion on these topics;

  • Knowledge of and insight in theoretical approaches;

  • Ability to conduct research and present the results to a public of peers;

  • Ability to formulate well-structured arguments orally, and in writing;

  • Ability to work in teams.

Mode of instruction

Student and staff presentations, discussion on the basis of discussion questions that are presented by the attendants. If possible, the course will end with a Graduate School international workshop.

Assessment method

  • Presentations of a case study;

  • Written paper based on the case study (about 2,500 words per participant). There are strict deadlines; the final paper should be handed in within 15 days after the end of the course;

  • Participation in discussion.
