Description
When you perceive, you perceive something, when you remember, you remember something, when you mean, you mean something, when you know, you know something. To perceive, to remember, to mean, and to know are all kinds of what Husserl calls intentional experience. Such experience is characterized by its having a certain directedness towards an object, the intentional object, thus what is perceived, remembered, etc. Husserl’s Fifth Logical Investigation is a study of intentional experience and its structure; how is intentional experience as such to be characterized, its structure to be analyzed, and how are the different kinds of intentional experience to be classified? Answers to these questions are provided in the Fifth Investigation , and they yield the basic tools for the phenomenological description of knowledge and meaning, the overarching aim of the Logical Investigations as a whole.
Our course will be devoted to a careful reading of the Fifth Investigation . The course will function well as an introduction to Husserl’s thinking more broadly, for it is in this work that we find the beginnings of Husserl’s phenomenology.
Participants should have access to the First and the Sixth Investigations besides the Fifth, since sections from these will be helpful at places in providing necessary background and illuminating development.
