Description
This course consists of two parts: a research internship and a teaching internship.
The research internship provides an excellent opportunity to learn about a variety of approaches and methods (e.g. observation) that are used in child and family studies. Dependent on the research project, students will be involved in the recruitment of participants, the actual data collection in the lab, home setting or child care setting under supervision of a qualified staff member.
During the teaching internship, students will be challenged to communicate the skills and knowledge obtained thus far to bachelor students, and to acquire practical experience in the didactics of teaching. When a student is placed for a teaching internship, the student will do a research internship of 7 ects (instead of 10 ects) and a teaching internship of 3 ects.
Research internship
The student participates in an ongoing research project. The work is conducted under the supervision of the researcher(s) involved. The research internship and choice of project take place in consultation with the co-ordinator. The specific research participation tasks will be put in writing in the form of a contract.
The internship can begin at any point during the academic year, but the timing will also depend on the availability of openings in a research project and staff capacity. In many cases the internship is offered in combination with the master’s project.
When there is a new opening for participation in a research project and there are no applications from students on file, the opening will be announced to the students via Blackboard and U-mail.Teaching internship
The student teaches study groups (“werkgroepen”) in one of the following four first-, or second-year Bachelor courses: a) Tutorials (Tutoraat), b) Data Processing with SPSS, c) Communication Skills Lab (Gesprekstechnieken), d) Parenting Education, Early Identification and Prevention of Parenting Problems (Opvoedingsvoorlichting, vroegtijdige Onderkenning en preventie van opvoedingsproblemen). The teaching activities are performed under the supervision of the course co-ordinator. The specific teaching participation tasks will be put in writing in the form of a contract, at least two months preceding the start of the internship.
The teaching internship will begin either in September or January. Students should sign up for the course by using the forms placed on the Blackboard-site of the course Research internship Child and Family Studies. Students may indicate their preference for teaching a specific course, but the final placement decision will be made by the co-ordinator.
