Description
In this course a series of highlights from Dutch architecture from period between 1850 and the present will be studied, from Berlage to Koolhaas. In each lecture, one or two major buildings will be discussed in some depth; they will be situated in the context of the main architectural debates of their time, and we will consider the European and global context of Dutch architecture.
Course objectives
After having finished this lecture series students will be able to analyse the main examples of Dutch architecture from 1850 to the present, locate them within the context of the oeuvre of the architects, and in the context of theoretical debates.
Having some understanding of the European and global context of Dutch architecture.
Being able to read plans, and analyse space, structure, building techniques and ornament.
Having some knowledge of the main literature on the subject, and the critical or theoretical perspectives or positions on which existing studies are based.

Assessment method
Written exam with short questions : mid-course exam (Tussentoets, 50% of the grade).
Written exam consisting of some essay questions (Final exam, 50% of the grade).

Blackboard will be used to post exams, the required reading list, powerpoints used in the lectures, and relevant events.
