Description
Gothic is the oldest attested Germanic language, especially known from a translation of the Bible by Bishop Wulfila from the 4th century AD. In this course, the phonology and morphology of Gothic will be treated, as well as some aspects of its Indo-European origin (comparison with other Germanic and Indo-European languages). In the second part of the course some texts from the Gothic Bible will be read in class.
Course objectives
Knowledge of Gothic grammar and the place of Gothic within the Germanic and Indo-European language family. Elementary reading proficiency in Gothic.
