Description

This course provides an introduction into Lithuanian, the Baltic language of the Republic of Lithuania. Lithuanian is the only living language playing a major role in the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European. It possesses a numer of archaic traits, particularly as regards its phonology, nominal morphology and syntax. Learning to speak Lithunian, one can slowly start to imagine how it would have been to speak Latin or Sanskrit. The course gives a survey of the whole phonology and morphology, and an introduction is given to the historical phonology and morphology. We will also read and translate a number of selected texts.
