Description
In this course, the linguistic diversity of Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula will be studied. The course deals basically with the following subjects:
the current language situation in the region
language history in Northern Africa: pre-Islamic languages
language history in Islamic times: the expansion of Arabic
language use in the region: multilingualism, diglossia…
Depending on the interest of the students, the course will further expand on sociolinguistic issues or on issues related to the language system.
Course objectives
The main course objective is to strengthen insight and knowledge of the linguistics of Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
