Description
The course is a continuation of the M&T1A in the first block. In this section we will turn our attention to the question of how to collect and analyze data. Students will learn about different research methods, such as experiments, surveys, and qualitative designs. We will also discuss how to make a systematic use of existing data, such as available statistics, documents and other available information. Particular attention will be based on relative strengths and weaknesses of different methodologies and on how to choose the most appropriate research methodology. Validity and reliability will be the two core concepts used in the discussion.
Course objectives
In the end of the course students are expected to have the following skills and knowledge: – knowledge about most common social science research methods – understanding strengths and weaknesses of different research methods – ability to critically examine the results of a research project – a skill to plan a research project

Mode of instruction
The course consists in lectures and weekly working groups. The course will be in the mix of English (lectures) and Dutch (working groups, testing) language. Participation in working groups is required for passing the course.
Assessment method
Weekly assignments, final exam, research project. Course material is also obligatory for the exam as far as it is set out in sheets, handouts and other information media.
