Description
This Masters’ seminar deals with conflict and cooperation in the multination democracies of the industrialised world, i.e. Canada, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Spain. The emphasis is on the potential lines of conflict that divide such democracies and the constitutional political mechanisms designed to deal with these. In this context, topics like nationalism, separatism, devolution, electoral competition, and constitutional reform will be discussed. The seminar will be based on class discussions, presentations, and a term paper. From Scotland to Quebec, students will choose a case from the industrialised world to write their term papers.
