Omschrijving
In this BA-seminar, the students will analyse the multiple faces of ‘1968’ by studying both Eastern and Western European developments. Europe’s youth movement was inspired by the American hippy movement and the protests against the Vietnam War. Still, in Europe the protests started in Poland. This first student uprising took place in March 1968, set off by the cancellation of performances of the play “Forefathers’ Eve” by Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, culminating in demands for freedom of expression and democratisation. The Polish protests were followed by the Prague Spring, which began on 5 January 1968, when reformist Alexander Dubček was elected First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and ended on 21 August 1968 as the Soviet Union and all members of the Warsaw Pact, with exception of Romania, invaded the country to halt the reforms. Dubček followed up on a longer phase of de-Stalinization in Czechoslovakia and granted additional rights to the citizens of Czechoslovakia, including the loosening of restrictions on the media, speech and travel. In Western Europe, students and workers nearly brought down the government in May 1968 with a strike of two consecutive weeks. May 1968 in Paris was about culture, politics and sex. In Germany the protests of May 1968 were explicitly directed against government legislation that could limit civil rights in case of an emergency. The students in this course will analyse parts of the European history of 1968 in their individual projects. As a group, they will answer the question: 1968? which 1968?
