Beschrijving

This course will examine the history and diversity of Spanish morphosyntactic variation (diachronic and synchronic perspectives). Hence, this course introduces students to the many varieties of Spanish spoken throughout the world, alone and in contact with other languages. Students will also refine their knowledge of linguistics, and will use a variety of research materials and resources.
Class time will be devoted to discussions of readings, analysis of written and recorded samples of various forms of Spanish. When possible, the class work will be supplemented by videos and visits by Spanish speakers from different parts of the world.

Leerdoelen

  • Acquisition of skills and techniques for learning how particular languages work and behave, with a particular focus on morphosyntactic variation Spanish.

  • The student will also get some practice in using those skills/techniques to discover the organizing principles of the Spanish language.

  • Awareness of the diversities and similarities of language systems.

The structure of the course will be lecture-discussion, with a large component of problem-solving.

Toetsing

2 tentamens, elk 50% van het eind cijfer. Het tweede tentamen zal een takehome exam zijn.

Aanmelden

Studenten die willen deelnemen aan het onderwijs moeten zich daarvoor aanmelden via het Universitair Studenteninformatiesysteem (uSis). Dat geldt ook voor de deelname aan het tentamen.

Opmerkingen

  • Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to participate in class discussion. All readings assigned for the week must be done prior to class. Every student is expected to contribute to class discussion through oral questions and comments every class. In order to facilitate class discussion, students will write a response to the weekly readings

  • A detailed class syllabus will be provided on the first day of class.
