Description
Each year a Chilean Visiting Professor comes to Leiden to teach about a key issue in contemporary Chilean society. In the period February-March 2014.
Prof. Claudio Fuentes (Universidad Diego Portales, Santiago de Chile) will teach a course entitled ‘Chile: Cambio político, memoria y movimiento social’.
Chile combines continuity and change. This course explores historical patterns of political continuity (party cleavages, constitutional frameworks) along with social change. This course will specifically explore long-term cycles of political change; the military coup and its political and social consequences; key aspects of the transition to democracy; the rebirth of social movements; and politics of memory and justice in contemporary Chile.
Course objectives
To learn to look at contemporary social and political issues from a long-term historical perspective; understanding both the elements of continuity and change within Chilean politics for the last 50 years; learning to connect present-day social and political issues to its historical roots in the past.
Timetable
The course consists of twelve lectures on Wednesdays (11.00-13.00 hrs; Van Wijkplaats 2, room 003) and Thursdays (11.00-13.00 hrs; Van Wijkplaats 2, room 003), starting on Wednesday 5 February 2014. Look at blackboard for full information.

Lectures and working group activities.
Assessment method
Participation in discussions and the writing of a paper.
