Admission requirements
The course is taught in Mandarin. Students must have a prior level of Mandarin at least equivalent to HSK 5. They must also meet all entry requirements for the MA in Chinese Studies.
Description
The course includes three components: before class listening exercises, class activity and after class tasks. First, before class listening exercises include listening comprehension, transcription of listening materials, and identifying useful language components / structures / patterns in listening materials. The selection of listening materials will be based on different styles and genres, for example, news, interviews, podcasts and so on. Second, class activity will consist of discussion of listening materials and exercises. Third, students are required to give oral presentations and host the discussion. Assignments are internet-based and should be submitted via Blackboard and Google Docs.
Students are also expected to prepare adequately and to contribute actively during the semester
Course objectives
Help MA students currently at a high-intermediate level to improve speaking accuracy, correctness and fluency.
Help MA students have a better command of vocabulary, grammar, language patterns for different topics, styles and occasions (both formal and colloquial).
