Description
Philosophy has been blessed with a number of short texts of outstanding quality. Consider Plato’s Meno , The Proslogicon by St Anselm of Canterbury, and Descartes Meditations. Of more contemporary works, also Quine’s From a Logical Point of View and Kripke’s Naming and Necessity show similar brilliance.
Gottlob Frege’s Grundlagen der Arithmetik form 1884 also belongs to this category of exceptional and pleasurably short philosophical works; it inaugurated the “linguistic turn” in philosophy. Still after 30 years the book remains a model of clarity and exactitude. It touches upon crucial questions of ontology and foundationalist epistemology, and attempts to resolve these by means of considerations taking their point of departure in language.
