First year psychology completed. Developmental Psychopathology (2nd year) or similar course recommended (in the latter case, contact the Psychology study advisors for admission).
Description
This course extends students’ knowledge of normal and abnormal development from infancy through to adolescence, and simultaneously builds knowledge around the approaches to assessment and intervention for clinical problems arising during this time.
Representative problems covered in the course include:
Anxiety Disorders
Autism
Somatoform Disorders
Psychosis/Schizophrenia
Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attachment Disorders
The lectures will be conducted by experts in the topic being addressed, generally psychiatrists, with emphasis on the daily practice within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Course objectives
To gain knowledge and comprehension of the clinical disorders discussed during the lectures.
To develop an understanding of the assessment, diagnosis and treatment approaches used in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
To develop an understanding of the current relevant developments within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
To become familiar with the different challenges in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and how they influence clinical decision making.
Timetable
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2013-2014):
Mode of instruction
A maximum of eight lectures, each incorporating a presentation by an expert in the field.
Assessment method
Exam: open (e.g., short essay) and multiple choice questions about the assigned literature, topics discussed during lectures, and case examples in which a diagnostic or treatment policy has to be formulated. The assigned textbook may be used during the exam.
