Description
Main focus of this course is the history and culture of Hittite Anatolia (ca. 1650-1180 BCE). It will address various aspects, such as the political history, the contacts and exchange with other Great Powers of the Late Bronze Age, religion, cultural traditions and social institutions.
The course is meant for students of Assyriology as well as students of Classics and Ancient History; a different trajectory applies to each specialty. Students will read articles and source texts in translation in preparation for each class. Each student will give a presentation about a topic of his or her choosing.
Course objectives
Students:
will gain insight into the history of the culture and history of Anatolia during the Hittite Empire (1650-1180 BCE).
will become familiar with recent discussions and literature in the field of Hittitology
learn to assess and contextualize the available source material and become familiar with the methodological problems involved in their interpretation.

an oral presentation (30%)
