Description
Political philosophy is ‘unavoidable’ wrote Michael Sandel, because ‘philosophy inhabits the world from the start; our practices and institutions are embodiments of theory. To engage in political practice is already to stand in relation to theory.’ Drawing from a wide array of theoretical sources, this introductory political philosophy course is designed to illuminate this relationship between theory and practice. We develop an understanding of some of the key texts in the history of political thought as well as influential interventions in contemporary political philosophy. Developing our own interpretations and critical assessments of these works will allow us to better understand contemporary political arrangements and to become more reflective citizens.
Course Objectives
Understanding of some of the central theories and concepts in political philosophy; Appreciation of the range and diversity of the sources of political philosophy; A capacity to use philosophical reflection on political issues; Further ability to critically read and engage with difficult texts.
