Description

Intermediate Russian is a Russian language course designed for students with knowledge of the language on a 200 level (A2-B1). The course will provide students with the futher knowledge of Russian and aims to further develop language skills in grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course provides the knowledge to communicate and understand Russian at B1- maximum B2 level.

Course Objectives

  • The required competences for a B1 level language can be described as follows:

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.

  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.

  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Mode of Instruction

The course has an interactive and communicative way of learning language. Course contents are grammar practice together with vocabulary building and developing the skills with class activities. The course is based on course books, materials prepared by the instructor and the Internet. A blackboard site will be available with essential documents i.e. planning, hand-outs, additional exercises

A substantial amount of self-study is required and the student are expected to be prepared for the classes.

Assessment

The tests assess speaking, reading, listening and writing skills.

Percentage: 15%

Assessment: Reading comprehension exam
Percentage: 20%
Deadline: Week 6 & 14

Assessment: Oral presentation (10-15 mins.)
Percentage: 20%
Deadline: Week 5 & 13

Assessment: Written exam: vocabulary, grammar.
Percentage: 25%
Deadline: Week 7 & 15

Assessment: Compositions. Creative writing in accordance with instructor.
Percentage: 10%
Deadline: Reading week (8 and 16)

Assessment: Attendance and participation in the class will count towards the final mark.
Percentage: 10%
Deadline: N/A

The exams will be scheduled on the Friday class of the mentioned week. Other assessments must be submitted by Sunday at 11:59 PM of the mentioned week.
