Description
The goal of this course is to learn how to properly measure a signal, to understand sources of noise and to cope with them. For this, we offer a combination of theory (lectures), exercises and practical lab work.
Topics:
Electronic circuits
Transfer functions, complex impedances, Bode-Plots, Step Response functionsFourier Transforms and digital processing
Convolution, Discrete Fourier Transform, Modulation, Aliasing, Analog/Digital conversionNoise
Noise spectral density, Johnson Noise, Shot Noise, Wiener-Khinchin theorem, Noise reductionFeedback and basic system analysis
Negative and positive feedback, Stability criterion, Laplace TransformOperational Amplifiers
Inverting amplifier, Differentiator, Integrator; Non-ideal OpAmp
Programme form
Lectures, excercises and lab work
Literature
Lecture notes Signal Detection and Noise and background information provided on Blackboard.
Schedule
Remark: it is possible that just a single practical group is formed when the size of the group allows this
Exam
Lab work, homework (on-line tests) and exam (mid-term exam)
Prerequisites
Generally: knowledge of Fourier Transforms, Experimental experience, being familiar with Labview software
The following Leiden courses are prerequisites:
Experimentele Natuurkunde, Natuurkundig Onderzoek, Labview, Analyse 3 NA (Fourier Transforms)
