Photosynthesis and Bioenergy
Up to date schedule information

Core course in MSc Chemistry, MSc Life Science and Technology

Description

In photosynthesis, the Sun’s energy is captured and stored by a series of events that convert the pure energy of light into the biochemical energy needed to power life. This course describes the molecular processes in photosynthesis from light capture to carbon fixation, with a special focus on the early events of light harvesting. Concepts of natural photosynthesis will be presented as design principles that have relevance for artificial photosynthesis. The second part of the course will focus on regulation and photoprotection in oxygenic photosynthesis, and the relation with bioenergy production and stress tolerance of plants and algae. By the end of the course, the students will have an understanding of the molecular mechanisms in photosynthesis; their interplay in driving the reactions for energy conversion and storage; and important parameters that regulate photosynthesis in plants and algae
