Admission requirements
Admission to this course is restricted to students enrolled in the MA Philosophy 60 EC, specialisation PPE. Students must have already completed – PPE Start of the Art (5014VPC1W).
The Research Seminar is mandatory for above mentioned students.
Description
This compulsory research seminar aims to develop advanced skills in research theory and method. While ‘State of the Art’ focuses on exploring the intersection of politics, philosophy, and economics as a site of philosophical inquiry, this research seminar explores more practical and empirical explanatory and analytical models, including through the use of case-studies to assist students in the preparation of their thesis. For most students, this seminar will be directly linked to the process of developing their theses; the content of seminars will draw directly from the trajectory of the work of the students themselves.
Course objectives
Students who successfully complete the course will have a good understanding of:
the foundational philosophical notions and distinctions in the interdisciplinary field of PPE;
the critical and creative significance of interdisciplinarity for philosophers;
the analytical value and role of workshopping in an interdisciplinary environment;
the relevance of their research trajectory across the fields of politics, philosophy, economics.
Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:
present this knowledge in written form (essay);
present their knowledge orally in the form of an effective academic presentation;
formulate a philosophically relevant question;
formulate a research topic that reflects both knowledge and understanding of key discussions and methods relevant to the field;
formulate a research plan that is feasible within the time available for its completion;
write a coherent argumentative text within limited time.

Attendance is compulsory.

Attending seminars: 14 × 3 hours = 42 hours
Time for studying the mandatory literature: 90 hours
Time for completing weekly assignments: 90 hours
Research plan: 10 hours
Writing midterm paper: 15 hours
Comments: 8 hours
Writing final paper: 25 hours
Assessment method
Participation and Web-assignments: 20%
Mid-term (take home) assignment: 30%
Final (take home) assignment: 50%
Resit
The resit consists of one (take home) examination (in two parts) for both written components. No resit is possible for participation and web-assignments. No separate resits will be offered for mid-term test. The resit covers the entire course content and the mark will replace previously earned marks for subtests.
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for texts, announcements, and discussion, as well as for web-assignments before each class.
