Description

A course on academic skills, viz.:

  • General study skills: time management, learning strategies, taking course notes, exam strategies.

  • Reading strategies: skimming, speed reading techniques.

  • Research skills: argumentation, evaluating academic sources, plagiarism prevention.

  • Oral presentation skills: speech and presentation techniques, various formats of presentation, advanced use of PowerPoint and making a screencast.

  • Academic writing techniques: essay structure , formulating a research question, academic writing style, layout (including advanced use of Word), plagiarism, giving and receiving feedback.

Course objectives

  • Acquisition of adequate studying methods, planning and preparation;

  • Improved reading comprehension using reading strategies;

  • Selecting scholarly literature by means of digital tools (library cataloque, Google Scholar, WorldCat, Web of Science);

  • Evaluating sources (books, articles, websites) as to scholarly quality and reliability, using library databases and internet tools (Ulrich’s, domaintools.com);

  • Recognizing and using various types of argumentation, identifying logical fallacies;

  • Formulating a well-defined research question, including main and subsidiary questions;

  • Stucturing academic texts and oral presentations;

  • Clear and well-argued exposition of research, using an academic (writing) style, with advanced use of word processing and presentation tools (Word, PowerPoint), and academic methods of referencing sources.
