Vak
2015-2016

Admission requirements

An extracurricular course for pre-Master students of Humanities.
Obligatory course for pre-Master students Film and Photographic Studies

Description

In this course students will read, analyse and discuss various academic texts, mainly in the field of Film and Photographic Studies and Arts & Culture. Each week a text will be studied and reveiwed in terms of:

  • argumentation

  • structure

  • research question(s)

  • references & annotations

This course is tailored to the needs of pre-Master students with relatively little experience in reading, analysing and reviewing academic texts and research at a Dutch university. Master students with deficiencies in those skills are also welcome. By means of a combination of practical assignments and explicit instruction the students will be guided in their work, which will be home assignments (reviews / take home exams); a presentation of a scholarly text and a review essay.

Course objectives

The main objective of the course is to prepare students for reading, analysing, reviewing and using academic texts and other sources. On completion the student will be able to:

  • select scholarly literature by means of digital tools (library catalogues, Google Scholar, WorldCat, Web of Science);

  • evaluate sources (books, articles, websites) as to scholarly quality and reliability, using library databases and internet tools;

  • recognize and review various types of argumentation, identifying logical fallacies;

  • recognize and review a viable and well-defined research question, including the main and subsidiary questions;

  • present discussions, analyses and reviews in a clear and well-argued manner, using an academic (writing) style, with advanced use of word processing and presentation tools (Word, PowerPoint), and academic methods of referencing sources.
