This course is only open to students of the minor Islam: Religion and Society, who have successfully completed the propedeutic exam of an (Academic) Bachelor programme.
Description
This course covers a number of capita selecta from the study of rituals and symbols of Sunni and Shi’ite Islam. The topics covered include creed, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, sacrifice, the birthday of the Prophet, lifecycle rituals, religious and social gatherings (cem, Sufi), food and Islamic clothing. In this context, the course focuses on the anthropological and religious dimensions.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Recognise various religious and anthropological approaches and themes in the study of rituals and symbols
Apply this knowledge to the study of Islamic rituals and symbols
Perform a thorough literature review of a given ritual and report on it both orally and in writing
