Successful completion of MSA3 or equivalent.
Description
This is the culminating language course of the first year. In this course studens build skills and knowledge acquired in the previous coursesz to complete their basic training in Arabic. This course also helps students become independent learners and take control of their further progress in becoming proficient in the Arabic language and culture.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be comfortable understanding sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. (e.g. basic personal and family information, local geography, employment). They will be comfortable communicating in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. They will be able to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. Furthermore, they will be able to perform more complex linguistic tasks in Arabic if well-rehearsed, or spontaneously produced with some difficulty or less accurately. They will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, university, etc. they will be able to produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. They will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Attendance and participation are obligatory. Classes missed for a good reason (to the discretion of the conveners and to be discussed BEFORE the class takes place) will have to be made up with an extra assignment. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

Assessment method
To be allowed to sit for the final exam, students must satisfy the following skills requirements throughout the course:
Classroom participation 20%
Quizzes 30%
Homework assignments 30%
Project 20%
Students who achieve at least 60% of the above skills requirements may register for the final exam, which counts for 100% of the course grade.
Students who do not receive a passing mark for the final exam may take a resit exam.

Registration
Students of the MA program Middle Eastern Studies are required to register through uSis before August/January 15. To avoid mistakes and problems, students are strongly advised to register in uSis through the activity number which can be found in the timetable in the column under the heading “Act.nbr.”.
Other students are requested to send an email to the study co-ordinator including their name, student ID number, course title and prospectus or catalog number. Depending on the availability of places, the study co-ordinator will register these students after August 15. By September 1 at the latest the student will be able to see in uSis whether (s)he is registered or not.
