This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passed Swahili 1 Beginners.
Description
During this course you will gain more in-depth knowledge of Swahili, grammarwise and vocabularywise.
After a quick revision we will look at different subjects like famous people, sport, some medical vocabulary (body parts and diseases), nature, economics, politics and corruption. We will read some newspaper articles in Swahili.

Course objectives
Objectives of the Swahili course 2: A2/B1
Speaking: A common conversation about different subjects like work, life in general, sport, politics, economics and corruption: A2
Listening: To understand a standard speech or a presentation about the above mentioned subjects: B1
Reading: Short stories, some newspaper articles, advertisements: B1
Writing: You will write a short paper about a certain subject: A2
This will be a subject-oriented course. After reading about a certain subject you will learn the vocabulary and grammar in order to write, talk and listen about this subject. This way we will explore the language to the full.

Mode of instruction
Three two hour tutorials every week.
Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.
Course Load
This course will be 10 EC (280 hours)
Total hours spent on attending lectures: 72 (= 6 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Time spent on studying: Around 12 hours per week (= 4 hours per lecture)
Other hours can be used for preparing for an exam or a presentation

The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

Remarks
For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason have to be discussed with the language instructor BEFORE the class takes place. Frequent absence will inevitably lead to lower participation grades, or denied access to the final exam.
This course uses Integrated communicative language learning method. Therefore active participation in the classroom activities is essential for successful learning outcomes.
