Description
This course builds on skills and knowledge gained in Arabic 2 to reach a low-intermediate level. This course will take students from repeating individual words and memorized phrases, to solid ability to create complex sentences. The course also focuses on diversity and commonalities across Arab communities inside and out of the Middle East.
Course objectives
The course will help students gain control of Arabic, and be able to construct their own Arabic sentences with ease. The course will help students talk, read, and write about a variety of topics such as shopping, family relations, making preparations, asking for and giving advice, instructions and directions.
To move from beginner to intermediate levels, you need to more than double your vocabulary, enabling you to use and refine the grammatical rules you have learnt in Arabic 1 and 2to cover more situations, and cover more depth in situations already familiar to you.
The course aims at the A2/B1 level of the Common European Framework.

Mode of instruction
Two two hour tutorials every week
Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or a tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.
Course Load
Total course load for this course is 5 EC (1 EC = 28 hours), this equals 140 hours, broken down by:
Atending classes: 48 hrs (4 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Preparing classes, exams and extra activities : 92 hours

- There is no re-sit test during the course.

Resit
If the final grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is the possibility of a resit.
The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester.
The grade for the resit will replace the grade for the quizzes, midterm and final exam.

Remarks
For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason have to be discussed with the language instructor BEFORE the class takes place. Frequent absence will inevitably lead to lower participation grades, or denied access to the final exam.
This course uses Integrated communicative language learning method. Therefore active participation in the classroom activities is essential for successful learning outcomes.
