Description

With the acceptance of the Lisbon Treaty, the third pillar of energy policy has become a shared competence of the European Union. In this course we will review the history of energy policy-making in the EC/EU, the current energy policy initiatives and the relationship of energy policy with other governance institutions. In the past decade, energy has again gained strategic importance. High prices (before the financial crisis) and climate change policy have greatly impacted on the governments’ involvements in the energy market.

Course objectives

Students will acquire insight in the history of EU engergy policy, the EU internal energy market policy and the relationship with other governance instituitions.

Course Load

Total course load for the course: 5 EC is 140 hours.

  • Hours spent on attending seminars (attendance is compulsory): 4 hours per week x 6 weeks = 24 hours

  • Time for studying the compulsory literature and preparation for the lectures: 6 hours per week x 6 = 36 hours

  • Preparation for the paper: 80 hours

Assessment method

  • Presentation 20%

  • Class participation 20%

  • Paper 60%
    The final paper will only be marked if the student has attended the seminars.

Weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

Retake paper: resubmit three weeks after the grade has been made known. In order to be eligible for the retake paper, students have to have failed the course.
