Final Grade
Your final grade will be determined in combination of the following items:Attendance: 5%
Weekly vocab quiz: 5%
Assignment: 10% (Workbook 5%, Extra reading assignment 5%)
Midterm: 25% (Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, Conversations and Writing 10%, Listening and Reading 10%, Oral (Skit) 5%)
Final: 55% (Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, Conversations and Writing 20%, Listening and Reading 20%, Oral (Fluent Reading, Skit, Free conversation) 15%)
Assignment Policy
Your assignment grade should be 6.0 or higher to pass the course. In other words, if you fail to submit assignments in a timely manner, you may fail the course even if your overall course grade is 6.0 or higher. Your diligent daily study is highly valued.
Assignments submitted two or more weeks late will not be graded: i.e. if you submit many assignments at the end of the semester all at once, they will not be counted toward your assignment grade. If you have a valid reason to submit your assignment late, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the course coordinator, A.R. Nam.
Resit Policy
You have 2 resit chances for vocab quiz upon request, within 2 weeks of the original quiz date.
There is no resit after the midterm written exams.
If your weighted average grade of midterm and final (1:2) for “Vocab, Grammar, Expressions, Conversation and Writing” is below 6.0, you need to resit only for this portion. This resit covers the entire material of the relevant area of the course and the mark will replace both midterm and final (thus, 30% of the final grade).
If your weighted average grade of midterm and final (1:2) for “Listening and Reading” is below 6.0, you need to resit only for this portion. This resit covers the entire material of the relevant area of the course and the mark will replace both midterm and final (thus, 30% of the final grade).
Even if your weighted average grades of written exams are 6.0 or higher, you are to resit if your final written exam is below 5.0.
There is no resit after the midterm oral skit. Regardless of your grade, you perform your skit only once and the grade is final even if you receive a grade below 6.0 (no fail as long as you perform a skit). Unless absolutely necessary (e.g. serious health issues such as a scheduled surgery, family emergency such as attending funeral), you cannot postpone your skit. If you postpone your skit, your grade will be downgraded by -3.0 from the true grade that you will receive from your performance.
Final oral exam consists of three components. You should receive overall 6.0 or higher to pass the oral exam. If you fail to receive 5.5 or higher in any of the three components (even if the average of the three is over 6.0), you need to resit the failed component(s).
Attendance Policy
As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance for all seminars is expected.
Failure to attend results in a lower grade (no penalty for the first three absences, but you will lose 1% each of your final grade from the 4th absence and on).
If you are late for class three times, it will be considered as one absence.
If you do not attend more than 9 classes (i.e. 10th absence and on), you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or assignments may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason not to attend, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the coordinator of studies, Ms. Kraakman, on this.
To pass the course and advance to Korean 1.2, you need to accomplish:
Decent attendance record (no more than 9 absences)
Assignment grade of 6.0 or higher
Exam grade of 6.0 or higher from all three components of the exams: 1) Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, Conversation, and Writing; 2) Listening and Reading; and 3) Oral (6.0 or higher for overall oral grade and minimum grade of 5.5 for individual components of oral exam)
If you fail to fulfill any single one requirement mentioned above, you cannot continue your study.
Blackboard
Yes. Blackboard will supplment the off-line class (e.g. extra course materials/self-study materials, announcement, grade check, etc.).
